Sub-Zero refrigerator panels in Manhattan, and the numbers that govern them
A panel-ready Sub-Zero is engineered to carry a custom panel up to a published maximum weight, and no further. Most Classic models allow 50 lb per panel, a handful allow 75 lb, and a grille panel is 13 lb. Designer Series columns run from 45 lb at 18 inches to 75 lb at 30 and 36 inches, with drawers at 15 lb. Exceed those and the door will sag, the seal will open at the top, and no adjustment will hold it.
Sub-Zero panel ready refrigerator: the published weight limits
These are Sub-Zero’s own figures, and they are the single most useful thing on this site for anyone with an integrated cabinet. They are maxima per panel, not guidance.
- Classic Series, most models: 50 lb (23 kg) per panel.
- Classic CL3650R(ID), CL3650RG, CL3650F and CL3050W: 75 lb (34 kg) per panel.
- Classic grille panel: 13 lb (6 kg).
- Designer Series 18 inch column: 45 lb (20 kg). 24 inch column: 60 lb (27 kg).
- Designer Series 30 and 36 inch column: 75 lb (34 kg).
- Designer Series 30 inch tall door: 50 lb (22 kg). 36 inch tall door: 60 lb (27 kg).
- Designer Series drawer: 15 lb (7 kg).
Sub-Zero panel refrigerator thickness and build-up
Thickness is specified as tightly as weight, and it decides whether the panel sits in the reveal correctly. Classic Series panels are 3/4 inch (19mm). The Classic overlay panel assembly is a 3/4 inch custom panel plus a 0.10 inch (3mm) spacer plus a 1/4 inch (6mm) backer. Designer Series panels have a minimum thickness of 5/8 inch (16mm).
This is where solid timber causes trouble. A joiner working to a thickness specification in solid walnut or oak will produce a panel that meets the dimension and comfortably exceeds the weight, because the specification constrains both and only one of them is easy to see. A veneered core hits both. If your door has started to sag, this is the first thing to check.
Sub-Zero refrigerator panel ready widths
Sub-Zero publishes typical Designer Series panel widths based on an 84 inch finished height, a 4 inch toe kick and 1/8 inch reveals. They are the starting point for a joiner rather than the last word, since the reveal scheme in a given kitchen may differ.
- 18 inch model: 17-3/4 inch (451mm) panel width.
- 24 inch model: 23-3/4 inch (603mm).
- 27 inch model: 26-3/4 inch (679mm).
- 30 inch model: 29-3/4 inch (756mm).
- 36 inch model: 35-3/4 inch (908mm).
Panel ready Sub-Zero refrigerator: what goes wrong in practice
Panels are made by cabinetmakers and hung by installers, and the refrigerator specification is not always the document in the room. The failures we are called to follow a pattern: a door that has dropped within a year of a kitchen refit, a seal that opens along the top edge, and a hinge that has already been replaced once.
The fix in that case is not a third hinge. It is a lighter panel. Until the load comes back inside the published maximum, the door will keep coming out of alignment and the seal will keep failing with it.
Sub-Zero panel ready refrigerator 36 inch
A 36 inch Designer column takes up to 75 lb per panel, and a 36 inch tall door takes 60 lb. Note that those are different numbers for the same nominal width, because a column door and a tall door are different assemblies. Check which one you have on the serial tag before sizing a panel.
Sub-Zero 30 inch refrigerator panel ready
A 30 inch Designer column allows 75 lb, while a 30 inch tall door allows 50 lb. That is a 25 lb difference on the same nominal size and it is exactly the sort of detail that gets missed when a panel is specified from a width alone.
Sub-Zero 36 inch refrigerator panel ready width
The published typical panel width for a 36 inch model is 35-3/4 inch (908mm), based on 84 inch finished height, a 4 inch toe kick and 1/8 inch reveals. Adjust for the actual reveal scheme rather than treating the figure as fixed.

Sub-Zero does not publish a 42 inch figure in the panel tables we can verify, so we will not invent one. For any model not listed above, the specification for your exact model is in its own design guide at subzero.com/specs, and that is the number a joiner should be working to.
Sub-Zero refrigerator door panel replacement
Replacing a panel is joinery work, but rehanging it is not: the door has to go back true or the seal will not close. If you are replacing a panel because the old one was too heavy, weigh the new one before it goes on. A 24 inch Designer column takes 60 lb per panel. Undercounter units have their own door opening limits worth respecting too: they open to a maximum of 115 degrees, or 90 degrees with the optional door stop fitted.

The grille panel is the one people forget, and it has the tightest limit of all at 13 lb. It is also the panel that has to come off to reach the condenser on a Classic or PRO cabinet, so an over-built grille panel makes routine maintenance harder as well as heavier than specified.
